The 2017 version of the annual "Birthday Ride" of the
Southern Indiana Draft Horse and Mule Association was held, as usual, at the farm of Jim Stevens near Newtonville, Indiana over the weekend
of August 18-20, 2017. Several of the attendees arrived on Thursday afternoon and on Friday morning there were 6 wagons ready to
ride. The weather was hot with a few morning pop-up showers in the area but we stayed dry, however the horseflies were a real nuisance. We returned
to the farm just before supper to find that several more folks had arrived in our absence. When we hooked up to ride on Saturday morning, the
weather was similar to Friday, but the group had expanded to 10 wagons, 1 cart and 2 outriders. We were somewhat stymied in our route selection
by the recent installation of some metal grate bridges in the area so we wound up retracing the route of our Friday ride in reverse. On Saturday
evening we had a big supper and several family members and old friends stopped by the camp to visit. A few of the members stayed up late on
Saturday evening consumming adult beverages. Sunday dawned hot and promised to get hotter with temperatures expected in the low 90's(F). Several
folks packed up and headed home on Sunday morning, so there were only 2 wagons, 1 cart and 1 outrider that went for a short ride on Sunday.
Overall it was a fun weekend. As always, Jim had everything very well prepared. He and Sharon are always very gracious hosts. While everyone was
together, the plans for the 9 day September ride were able to be discussed. Click on the link below to view photos from this fun weekend.
